personally i'd like the Roughnecks dvd, as i'm rather fond of the Starship Troopers animated series. tsktsktsk, typos.

NBC pilot takes a walk on the wild side
$2 mil pilot focuses on an American family in Africa

By BRYAN PEARSON

JOHANNESBERG -- U.S. broadcaster NBC is venturing deep into the wilds with its latest pilot about a veterinarian from Los Angeles who loses his job and heads for a game park in Africa.
Being shot just outside Johannesburg, the $2 million pilot was written and exec produced by Thomas Lynch. He previously exec produced NBC skeins "Just Deal" and "Skate" and produced "100 Deeds for Eddie McDowd."

Lynch says he wanted to drop "a typical American family," complete with marital troubles and a drug-abusing teen son, into an "extreme situation" to see how they coped.

Wild animals including rhinos, wildebeest, lions, elephants and even pythons feature in the pilot for the series, dubbed "St. Georges."

"It is a family drama that has all the issues the typical family confronts, but everything is heightened by the fact that they are in Africa," Lynch said last week during a break in shooting.

Vet Brian Winters (played by Ed Quinn) "takes a great leap of faith" by taking charge of the game reserve, which also rescues animals, Lynch says.

Mel Harris ("thirtysomething") co-stars as Winters' wife, Erin.

"Once Mel agreed to come on board we looked around for a cast who would be able to act with her," Lynch says.

Of his cast of 20, half are American, half South Africans. Canuck Justin Chatwin plays the teen son, Ryan.

"We thought we would have to import more actors, but South Africa has probably the finest emerging film community I have ever worked with," he says.

Directed by Emmy winner Eric Laneuville ("I'll Fly Away"), the pilot will be presented to NBC execs this month.

If the skein is greenlit, Lynch will return to South Africa in mid-June to begin filming in early July, with the first episode to be screened in September.

Lynch says he chose South Africa because "we found multiple locations, crews that are very filmic, good infrastructure and plenty of wild animals."

While the weakness of the rand against the dollar was a "secondary" consideration, shooting in South Africa was cheaper than L.A.

"But in any case I would only have considered this project for Africa. Filming it anywhere else would be cheating," he says.

Date in print: Sun., Apr. 7, 2002.

Ed Quinn is one of the casting choices listed in a poll for Joe Morelli from Janet Evanovich's One for the Money. i haven't read the book, but if i find a copy i'd look and see if Ed seems right for the role. i think he'd probably do quite well, considering that it's set in Trenton, NJ, and Ed was born in Jersey.

it has come to my attention that Ed's friend Eric Osland was the original bassist(?) of Scattergood, a band from California formed in 1995 that Ed was a part of. Eric left the group in 1999.
like EQ, Eric was also formerly with L.A. Models agency.
and he was in Glamour February 1995 with Rebecca Romijn (6 pages) — i sure wouldn't mind seeing those pics.
